Caring for Your PetTips to help take care of your petPet Care Tips We all love our pets, and we want to give them the best care possible by being well informed and smart about what it takes to do just that. I have provided some pet tips and facts below for your information in the hopes that this will help you be well informed about taking the best care of your pet. I would like to express at this time that this information is not intended in any way to replace proper veterinary care, and if there is any doubt about your animal's well being, please do not hesitate to contact your veterinarian. Check back often as I will continually add information to help with the care and maintenance of your pet.
Water
Of course everyone knows that it is important to give any animal plenty of free choice water. However, every once in a while the container the water is in may develop a hairline crack, or maybe a large heavy water trough is sitting on a sharp rock. It is important to examine your containers for any possible leaks.
A metal trough that we used to water our horses developed little tiny pinholes, apparently due to rust. They were in the bottom and the water leaked out overnight. Fortunately this did not occur while we were on a trip! We have since switched to the black, Rubbermaid troughs.
Fences
Those underground electric fences for dogs (and cats!) are wonderful, but the price can be a little intimidating. One way to look at the cost is this: weight the cost of the fencing to the cost of a vet bill. A good friend of mine had a regular fence, but her dog kept jumping it. One day the dog was hit by a car. After repairing a broken hip, etc. for $400, the dog is fine. Not wanting to repeat the scenario, she put in the underground fence. She does not have to worry any longer!
Spay or Nueter
Everyone knows by now that you should spay and nueter your pet. Did you know that that procedure can actually decrease the desire to roam? It also helps keep other "interested" animals from prowling your yard. Most vets will recommend the procedure be done at six months of age. The myth that your dog will get fat because of this can be dispelled by regular exercise and a proper diet.
Table Scraps
How many times has a veterinarian said, "No table scraps!". It is hard to not give our pets something, especially when their big soft eyes are so pleading! However, it is healthier for them if they do not have them. Especially real bones. Yes, the dogs of yore ate everything. My how times have changed! The domesticated dog or cat benefits more from a name brand food with an occasional treat made for them.
Bones
The problem with bones is that if the animal eats enough, it can build up and cause blockage in the intestine. This can get expensive. One vet I know had to remove a round steak bone that a small dog had gotten his lower jaw through. The owner had tried everything. Soap, vaseline, you name it to get it to slide off of the jaw, but to no avail. The vet finally ended up cutting into the bone until it was thin enough to break off. That was one releived pup!

Denny Martindale is an extremely talented artist who has a beautiful eye for detail. Her portraits look like photographs instead of paintings. I literally had to ask her if what I was looking at was a photograph of a pet or an actual painting of the pet. As it turned out, it was one of her custom pet portraits that she had created for a mutual friend of ours. I knew the dogs in the portrait, and the techniques that Denny used in creating this portrait were just amazing to me; the dogs' coats looked shiny in the portrait, just like they do in real life, I just couldn't get over the talent that Denny posses that allows her to create the detail that just reached out and grabbed me while I gazed at the portrait. |
